In Ontario, we're seeing ticks in places they've never been seen before.
We are also seeing tick species that weren't thought to inhabit Canada or even the Northern US as the ticks are brought north on migrating birds.
Dr. Scott Weese, along with the University of Guelph, has launched a new project to track ticks in Ontario.

Fleas
- Fleas caused Bubonic plague, Black plague and Murine Typhus. It is estimated that fleas have killed more people than have died in all the wars in history.
- Flea and tick bites can transmit the Bartonella parasite that can infect dogs, cats, humans and rodents. It also causes “Cat Scratch” in humans.
- Even though it’s not a disease, “flea bite allergy dermatitis” can cause a pet to experience intense itching, inflamed raw skin, and hair loss. Itching and inflamed raw skin can last up to 14 days, and that's from one or two flea bite, and naturally hair loss will last much longer.
- One flea can transmit tapeworms to a dog when a dog bites or licks itself and injests the flea.
- Dried tapeworm segments appear on the hair around the dogs anus. They look like dried rice. Often live tapeworm segments can be seen crawling out of the anus. (gross, I know)
- People can also get tapeworms.
Ticks
lTicks can transmit disease causing bacteria, virus, parasitic worms, fungi, and protozo.
If your dog has fleas or ticks you can purchase medication through your vet. If you prefer an Holistic approach with essential oil recipes, please see below. The oils need to be of high quality. I suggest using Revive or Do Terra Essential Oils. If you would like to purchase these oils you can contact me or order online but they must be of high quality.
Tick and Flea Spray Repellant
40 drops Geranium Rose oil, 1/3 cup distilled water, 1 tbsp Witch Hazel
Flea Spray
30 drops Peppermint, Eaucalyptus, Cedar wood, or Citronella oil to one cup distilled water and spray on dog for flea repellant.
All of these will need to be applied at least every 1-4 days.
- Toxins released by certain ticks can also cause what is known as Tick Paralysis in dogs and humans.
- Lyme Disease is one of the most frequently diagnosed and well known tick borne diseases in dogs.
- Humans can get Lyme Disease if bitten by an infected tick.
