Periodontal Disease
This disease develops in stages overtime. First a buildup of food particles and bacteria forms plaque along the gum line. Plaque is a milky white film that develops on teeth everyday. When it is not removed it combines with minerals in their saliva and forms tartar. This process only takes 3-5 days. Tartar irritates the gums and leads to gingivitis. The inflammation caused by gingivitis works its way down the root canal causing teeth to loosen. Gingivitis separates the gums from the teeth and forms pockets that harbour abscesses that lead to bone loss. This can be painful.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
STAGES OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE
- Stage 1 - slight buildup of tartar and reddened gums
- Stage 2 - Thicker tartar and swollen gums, x-rays show slight bone loss
- Stage 3 – Moderate tartar buildup and gums receding, x-rays show increased bone loss.
- Stage 4 – Tartar may encapsulate the teeth, with deep pockets of gum loss as well as loose teeth and rish of abscesses.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
- Give dental treats that do not contain hidden sugars such as molasses, beet pulp, and fructose.
- Give dental toys with raised nubs that will massage their gums, loosen plaque, and strengthen jaw muscles.
- Give knotted ropes such as string or rope toys that act as a floss. My dogs play tug with each other and the rope, then lay down to have a chew.
- Put additives in pets water daily or use Chlorhexidine wipes to kill bacteria. Wipes should be used three times a week.
